Recorded at Woolwich Green Farm in Berkshire and produced by Chris Blackwell, the album employed highly unusual recording techniques, including the placement of speakers and microphones around a lake to capture natural ambience and environmental sounds. Its eight tracks range from the reggae-inflected ‘Big Muff’ and the hypnotic ‘Smiling Stranger’ to the tender ballad ‘Couldn’t Love You More’ and the expansive closing piece ‘Small Hours’, a haunting composition that showcases Martyn’s pioneering use of Echoplex guitar effects.
